ISLAMABAD: Due to the high demand for donkeys from China, the donkey prices in Pakistan have seen a huge increase in recent few months, the high amount for donkeys has touched PKR 300,000.
In China, the donkey is very demand as its hide is used to make cosmetics and medicines there and also used in Chinese traditional medicine known as e jia.
According to reports, this sharp increase in prices has caused a drop in the local sale and purchase markets, adding famous Karachi’s Lehari donkey market.

Sellers in the market revealed that hike in price is due to high demand from the neighboring country China. This is making difficult for local buyers to afford donkeys. Donkeys have become valuable for traders, who are now exporting hides to meet China’s needs.
In June 2023, the federal cabinet approved the export of donkey hides to China, with dairy products and other goods added to it.
In July 2024, the Senate Standing Committee on Commerce suggested that Pakistan should export living donkeys to China not only their hides. The committee also revealed that there are no restrictions from the government for exporting donkeys, But there will be some rules and regulations that are still to be decided.
