What is Arbaeen Walk?
Every year, millions of Shia Muslims, along with people from other faiths, participate in a special pilgrimage, known as one of the largest public gatherings in the world.
Over about 20 days, pilgrims usually walk hundreds of kilometers from various cities in Iraq and Iran to the holy city of Karbala. Here, they remember the death of Imam Hussein in battle.
Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and son of Imam Ali, was killed in 680 AD on the plains of Karbala in a battle against the forces of Caliph Yazid, whose rise to power was disputed.
To mark the 40th day of mourning for Hussein, the pilgrims arrive in Karbala to pay their respects at his shrine. On the final day of Arbaeen, millions gather around the shrine.
Along the way, volunteers set up stations to offer food, water, and shelter to the pilgrims. People from villages along the route also keep their doors open for anyone needing a place to rest.
Many pilgrims choose to walk 80 km (50 miles) from the nearby city of Najaf, where Imam Ali, Hussein’s father, is buried, to Karbala. Those traveling from farther cities, like Mashhad in Iran, which is 2,600 km (1,600 miles) away, usually drive.
