Islamabad Faces Another Suspected Mpox Case

Another suspected mpox case (monkeypox) was registered at Islamabad Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, on Monday. The person is under special treatment in PIMS according to sources.

The patient is a 47-year-old man from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) who recently returned to Pakistan from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The hospital spokesperson, Dr.Nasim Akhtar this person has shown some symptoms of monkeypox and is under treatment in a special ward.

Before this suspected case, Pakistan had already confirmed three cases of monkeypox, with one more person under investigation by doctors.

In a related incident, the first monkeypox patient in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has gone missing from his home in Mardan. The patient, who had also returned from Saudi Arabia, was diagnosed with monkeypox in Peshawar. However, when a medical team visited his home to provide guidance, they found it locked. Further inquiries revealed that the patient was not at his family’s home in Dir either.

On Thursday, global health officials confirmed that a new strain of the mpox virus was found in Sweden and linked it to an outbreak in Africa. This was the first time when this virus was seen outside Africa.

The World Health Organization (WHO) indicated a high alert level on Wednesday as it goes out from Africa, where cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo have spread to nearby countries.

The virus broke the African boundaries in January 2023, and 27,000 cases have been found from which 1100 faced death. This virus spread mostly among the children in Congo. The main symptoms of mpox are pus-filled sores and flu. It is usually mild but can be deadly, mainly for children, pregnant women, and people who do have not a strong immune system such as those with HIV.
