QUETTA – A powerful explosion at the Quetta railway station on Saturday morning tragically killed at least 24 people, including a woman, and injured over 40 others.
The blast occurred at the booking office just as the Jaffar Express was due to arrive at the platform, with casualties expected to rise due to the usual crowds at the station.
An official told the media that the Jaffar Express at Quetta railway station, set to depart for Peshawar at 9 am, had not yet reached the platform when the explosion happened.
The Civil Hospital administration confirmed receiving 24 bodies, adding that some of the injured are in critical condition.
Quetta Commissioner Hamza Shafqaat has stated that it was a suicide blast, with a banned group claiming responsibility. He explained that the bomber entered the station through an open area, bypassing the walkthrough gate.
Law enforcement personnel were among those killed in the explosion.
Acting President Yusuf Raza Gilani has condemned the attack on civilians and promised to continue the fight against terrorism. Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti also ordered the best possible medical treatment for the injured and directed authorities to investigate the incident.
